Frugal engineering is an approach that prioritizes resourcefulness and cost-effectiveness in the design and development of information systems. With Elasticsearch and Kibana, frugalness can be achieved through the open source licensing and scalable cloud services for data storage, analysis, and visualization. Furthermore, using Elastic as NoSQL database can be very effective in some use cases. Together, Elasticsearch and Kibana has provided a cost-effective solution for a new licensed electricity supplier in the UK. The firm has weathered the numerous market shocks in the past 3 years. Being able to extract valuable insights from their data without breaking the budget, helped immensely.
